The Swiss company Freitag founded by Daniel and Markus Freitag is the leader in producing truck tarp recycled bags and accessories. Each year they cut up over 390 tons of tarpaulins at the Nœrd industrial complex in Zurich-Oerlikon. The tarps are then transformed into the individualistic “Fundamentals” and the more upmarket monochromatic “Reference” product lines.

The “Reference” line was inspired by messenger briefcases of the 19th century. Its design was transformed and tweaked to meet the demands of todays detail-conscious urban customers. The unicoloured vintage truck tarps used for the products have been on the road for about 10 years before being recycled and processed in a similar way as leather.

The concept of the visual redesign was developed in close collaboration with Dominik Hodel and Johnny Graf.
